Happy Endings

The shelter staff love when a pet gets adopted or is returned to its owner. But what they like even more is hearing about it! We are happy to display some of our recent successes on this page.

Turtle & Poppy

My husband and I adopted Poppy (now Maggie) after fostering her for a few days, she fit into our life and home so easily we figured it was meant to be. She is so smart and willing to learn that I have a tough time keeping up with her. I don't know how we ever got along without her, it seems like she has been with us forever not just  5 months. Even one of our 3 cats misses her whenever she is out for a play date or walk (the other two aren't  quite as happy with us or the dogs right now but they manage). Everyone who meets her falls head over heels for her, and she loves everyone she gets to meet. We figured that she completed our family…..

…until I saw the picture of Turtle (now named Nyla), I knew as soon as I saw her that she would also become part of our family. After fostering her for a weekend it was a done deal and we couldn't be happier. Maggie and Nyla are quite good friends and will run after each other for hours if possible. Nyla knows quite a few commands and is also really easy to teach. They both love to cuddle, which makes for an eventful movie night on the couch or when they try to sneak onto the bed. Nyla has this high pitched squeal that she lets out when one of us gets home, then the two of them try to see who gets the most hugs at the front door. I really cannot get enough of the two of them, just ask my friends and coworkers who probably wish I would just once talk about something else, but I can't :) They are so wonderful and sweet that I am shocked and grateful every day that I was the person fortunate enough to adopt them, I couldn't ask for 2 better friends.

Just this weekend while fishing in our boat they both started growling at the shore, a few minutes later a bear came into view and they continued till he ran off (I am sure he really couldn't be bothered with us), it was neat how they made the exact same movements and noises. Thankfully we didn't see him again.

Thank you so much to everyone that made a donation or sent good wishes for Nyla's surgery. You'll all be happy to know that she doesn't miss a beat without that leg, sometimes I think she is a little faster them Maggie, if Maggie goes a different direction Nyla just drops her bum and spins around on it and is off running, usually ahead of Maggie. She is all healed up now and the vet said they have no concerns at all.

I will keep everyone at the S.P.C.A. posted about our girls.

Bru

Hello Lloydminister SPCA from Calgary,

I just wanted to update you on a beautiful Blue Nosed Pit Bull that was surendered to your facility at the beginning of 2010.

We came to know Bru through a rescue organization in Calgary called Pit Bulls for Life. How this smart, loyal, friendly fellow came to this organization from Lloydminister SPCA is a mystery. We are just thankful that someone seen what a awesome dog he was and contacted this great organization to help find him a home.

When we first met Bru in April 2010 I was shocked at how big he was as he out weighs our daughters pitty by about 30 lbs. I really wasn't sure if I wanted a dog this big or even if I could handle him. Bru has been amazing, he came to us knowing all his commands as well as how to high five. He was house trained and never needed to be crated, mostly he needed leash and recall work, both have come a long way with doggie training classes and some work with his new pack.(hubbie & me).

Bru gets to go on long walks daily on and off leash, then on the weekend he gets to head to the Rockies with us for some major hiking. He is very affectionate, calm and loves to just cuddle. We take him to the doggie park, and he goes to day care once a week to play and socialize with other doggie friends.

Bru is doing great and again thank you for letting Pit Bulls for Life help find him a new home.

Harley

I thought I would drop you a line telling you how Harley is doing. I bought him March 22/08 from the spca. He was four months old. He is doing fine we love him alot. He can't jump on the furniture but we help him on to the bed. That is where he sleeps at night. And when I am at work he has the run of the kitchen. He loves most dogs. He has two buddies who live a block away and he gets to visit with them often. We never changed his name because Harley suits him. My brother in law calls him Harley low rider. My husband would be lost without him. He is like our child now. That is how much we love him.Marie Stappler suggested that I should write you and tell you how he is doing. He loves to go for walks but still is a little scared of loud noisies. But he travels very good in the car. When I go up town he lays on the front seat and is very quiet..Well now you know about our Harley thank you for letting me adopt him. Our house would be very lonely without him in it. He loves to go out side and check out the neighbors. This summer we are planning on building him a fenced in yard

Much Anticipated Visit!

Kelsey and Tucker (Ralph)

Thank you Kelsey for bringing Tucker down for that visit! You would not recognize him if you knew him from his time in the shelter but Tucker, formerly Ralph now looks great.

When Tucker first came into the care of the Lloydminster & District SPCA he could not hold down food and hardly weighed 60 pound. Look at him now. Thank you,Kelsey and family for taking such good care of him.

Peach

Hey my name is peach...still! (Guess they liked my name)

My adoptive parents wanted me SO bad they called the SPCA everyday to make sure I was still there until they could take me home! I wasn't shy when I got home and immediately explored everything. Then my new family brought me home a nice bed, scratching pad and a few toys (my favourite is the mouse on a string) I went to the Doctor and he told me everything was well and gave me my rabbies shot. I am always showing my new mom and dad how much I appreciate them taking me home with cuddles and kisses and I am very happy and very spoiled!

Thank you so much to everyone at the SPCA for finding me, taking me in and giving me a great home with a new family, they love me very much and are really happy to have taken me home!

Serenity

Just wanted to tell you that Serenity is doing wonderful. We adopted her when we saw her at PETCETERA in Saskatoon on Dec 09 and since then we have renamed her Lucy. We are so happy to have her with us. She is so loving and extremely playful and we couldn't have asked for anything more. When we first got her she pulled quite a bit on the leash when walking but she is slowly getting better at it. She has settled into her new life with us and is great to have around. We got to take her on her first trip with us in Feb 2010 and she loved it. We also have taken her to my boyfriend's family farm and she loves it. So much to do and she gets to be around other animals. She is amazing in our place, doesn't chew on anything or sleep on any furniture (unless its her own personal bed of course). She doesn't even need the kennel anymore (we have put it away completely). She loves to be outside and we absolutely love taking her to the dog park where she can socialize with other dogs. I'm sure if she could she would be outside the entire day. My boyfriend and I just wanted to thank you for giving us such a wonderful dog, we love her very much.

Spot

We adopted a kitten from the SPCA Nov.3/09. They called her Spot but my 3 year old daughter has renamed her Baby Jaguar. lol I thought it was fitting, cute and original! We love our kitty. She is playful and cuddly. She usually sleeps with my daughter now but sometimes will sleep with us too. All of her shots are up to date, she's been spayed and microchipped. Now that it's spring she really badly wants to come outside with us so I'm going to find a cage for her so she can enjoy outside with us and be safe. Might even get a harness and see if she'd like to go for a walk. As I'm typing this she is on my lap purring and trying to lay on the computer of course!  :)  She is a climber! She climbs up the curtains and my room divider screen is in shreds but that's not surprising, kitties do that stuff, no problem! One day I would like to get her a companion to keep her company when we aren't home. She'd probably like another cat but we're not going to rush into that decision. So now you know that this little cat is in good hands. Adopting this cat has changed my life, I now volunteer at the SPCA.

Diesel

Just thought that Jen and I would send you a quick update on our Diesel.  For starters, Thank you guys very much for taking such good care of him while he was with you.  We get tons of compliments about what a handsome dog he is.
I truly could not have asked for a better dog.  From the second he jumped into the truck to come back to Saskatoon, he just sat smiling the whole trip.  When we got him home, he already seemed to be completely house broken. We have been taking him for at least two walks a day along with lots of games in the backyard.  He still loves his ropes, but we are also working on retrieving tennis balls.  His leash trainning has come a long way in a very short time.  He is also very good with his basic commands: sit, stay, lay down, drop, and has seemed to pick up "truck" on his own.  The kennel trainning has also been going very well.  He is not locked in for more than a couple hours a day and is usually sleeping inside it, with the door open, at night.  His trips to the dog park have been going very well, though we still have not taken him there off-leash.  Diesel will be starting obedience trainning next week, I think it will go very well.  Next I am still planning on getting him into Agility Trainning.  We'll keep you guys updated and send more pictures :)

Moxie

Just a note to let you know how Moxie, now known as Roxie is doing.

Roxie lives on a farm site of about 450 acres.  Outside our back door, about 30 feet away is a natural bush that encompasses about 3 acres with corals etc.  Through the days when we are not home, she has a heated shop with a doggy door (that she hits at about a hundred miles an hour) where she has cats, kittens, and toys.  At night, when we are home, she spends her time with us in the house.  We have only had 2 dogs in our 31 years, but we believe that to make a dog part of the family, they have to live like part of the family.  She is not allowed in the living room, but our living room, and her mat are 6 to 8 feet away from where she is, and we make it a point to spend at least 15 minutes of every hour with her on that mat.

She has a bed, in our bedroom that is luxurious, and that is where she is supposed to sleep.  In the middle of the night, we will find her right at the foot of our bed, and when the alarm goes off in the morning, She comes to my side of the bed first, for a morning pet, then goes to Joanne’s side for the same.

Yes, we did have problems.  It has been 13 years since I had to puppy proof.  O.H. well.  She and or we are still in training stage.  Through the days we try to make time to run off some P&V, and she enjoys that.  She does enjoy play time, but she is also quite smart.  She is responding very well to all of our training, which is mostly done with patience and love.  She learns better with scolding and indifference than with spanking.  Nipping is a problem, nipping with dogs, is a sign of affection, and so that causes some problems, but we will get through that.

At night, when she has settled down, she like nothing better than for me to lie on her mat, so she can wrap her forelegs around me, and sleep.

All in all, Roxie is a very loving, respectful PUPPY, that is going to (and already is) be a very good dog.

Trying to get a picture of her, at her best, I think she is camera shy.

Twitch

Sarah here writing to update you on Twitch.  We picked her up on the 18th of December I think and she has been as good as gold ever since (yeah right!).  Her brother Dodger and she got along right away and have been each other’s shadows for 3 weeks now.  They walk well together and neither will pull.  They like our backyard but Dakota gets a bit cold where her brother doesn’t with his big fur coat.  We haven’t had any accidents, even when we had to leave her and her brother alone while my fiancé Ryan and I were at work for 8 hours.

On Boxing Day we visited our old neighbours in North Battleford, their two dogs and three children.  We had Dakota for a week at that point and we were worried about her reaction to the new dogs and the one year old.  The baby ended up escaping her play pen and laying on Dakota while we were playing a round of wii.  She didn’t even bat an eye at the baby; she must have been a great mom.

We’ve taken her to the vet and gotten her rabies shot done.  It turns out three of her teeth have to be pulled.  She is going to the vet in February for three extractions and a dental cleaning.

My fiancé and I just wanted to say thank you all so much for our lovely girl.  She’s quite the celebrity as we were told by our neighbour that she was in the kennel with the GOAT radio host and has been recognized as “Twitch with the puppies” twice now!  We hope you had a lot of adoptions over the holiday and we hope all the animals you help get humans who love their “mutt” as much as we love ours.

Fudge

Hi there,
Just wanted to let you know that Fudge is doing GREAT! (I have renamed her Patience, in light of our long wait).  It took her a grand total of 20 minutes to make herself comfortable in my place, and to befriend Veleda (my rabbit).  They are next to inseperable now, they nap together and play together; Patience likes to chase Veleda, and Veleda likes to ambush/jump on Patience when she's sleeping.Patience has also become my unofficial rabbit groomer.  The first thing she does when I get home from school is stand and meow by Veleda's cage until I let her out :)  The only "issue" I've had so far is that Patience does like to try and steal Veleda's nightly salad (go figure, a cat that likes spinach...), and that they get a bit competitive when it comes to attention from me, but she gets put firmly in her place pretty quickly by the rabbit.  Patience takes the rabbit's reprimands with good grace, and just purrs away until they can play again.
Anyway, that's my ramble; the short version is that both Veleda and I are VERY happy with Patience.  She fits right in and it feels like she's been part of the family for ages, so thanks to everyone there for caring for her until she could come home :)
